Room darkening tips?

Light's a topic here, too, in NYC... at night... especially for some of us, that like it darker.

My guess is, that light finds it way (once you've added the shades) from both sides & above the shade... so, there's your problem-areas... and the answer depends on the window (how its set -- deeply, or if the walls & window are on the same plane, more or less). If it's flat, adding drapes, that have linings that can be draw are best.. but then, you have the weight to contend with and have something else to clean.. I know all this, because my wife drives me crazy...

What I'd do.. thinking about it (and I like Yahoo Answers, because suddenly we're confronted with problem-solving that a minute ago.. I'd never have thought I'd be concerned with!)... is adding very inexpensive mini-blind.. dark colored.. well-measured within the window frame that can be pulled up to allow sunlight by day & closed tightly to help shut-out that light..

EDIT

oh, and make sure there's no mirrors around or shiny glass on wall-hung art/posters that relect & transfer light, at night...
